PECS Program
The PECS program is considered an essential program that activates the communication skills of children with speech delays or who have non-functional or limited language. Due to PECS's effectiveness, it helps children open a channel for communication and understanding their needs, feelings, and desires. The PECS program is based on communicating the needs and desires of a child through pictures, relying on the principle of applied behavioral analysis for children. The child gives a picture to the adult in exchange for getting something they want. For example, If the child wants to get a piece of candy, he takes a picture of the piece of candy and gives it to his father or mother, and then one of them gives him the piece in return.
The importance of the PECS program for children with autism and other communication disorders
The importance of the PECS program is that it is a way to communicate with children who are unable to speak, with the aim of opening a channel of communication and understanding their needs and desires and urging them to ask for those things and helping them get them. Some of those needs are as follows:
Basic needs such as eating, drinking and using the bathroom (self-care).
Expressing their desires such as wanting to play or do a certain activity or go to a certain place.
Expressing their emotions such as feelings of joy, sadness and anger.
As well as many other points that can be trained on in the program, there are no limits to it, and all you have to do is find the appropriate image for the thing or activity or anything else, and train the child on it
